In January 2010
the citizen united ruling was appointed which made everything a political war
zone. This ruling tossed out the ban on making independent expenditures and
financing electioneering communications. Independent expenditures is when money
is spent on behalf of a candidate by citizens not affiliated with his or her
campaign. You can give as much as you want to a political group as long as that
group’s spending is not officially coordinated with a campaign.
The freedom of speech
is supposed to protect the right of expression for all no matter whom. If this
right can be limited by groups or people then this right can be changed. This change can continue until it doesn’t
protect the speech of TV shows you like, articles you read, and music you hear.
This change can eventually not protect our right of speech at all. Protecting corporate
may seem weird to some, but if you think about it as protecting the right it’s
self then this is the best thing to do.
On the other hand
the reason why liberals would not support it is because every ad might be subliminal.
TV will have some corporate advertisement or ideals forced on people like commercials.
Radio stations will force political ideals that even they don’t agree with. People
could be brainwashed by these forced on ads by different types of main stream
media. People shouldn’t have to be on guard all the time from these forced
ideas.
In conclusion I feel
that it was the wrong decision made in citizens united vs. the FEC. This decision
will affect the elections and stop the tampering with free speech, but for a
price. For years corporate power was limited in politics and now the ban has
been lifted corporate does have more power. The Federal Election Campaign Act of
1972 forced candidates to reveal who funded them in their campaign. This law also
gives a limit to what on donor can give. There some corporations that have a
lot of money and in order to keep it they will spend as much for the candidate
that will aid them.
Yahni,
ReplyDeleteGood post. You've got the right idea, we just have to shore up some things.
First, you need to include 2 or more pictures in each post. This will attract your readers and grab their attention.
Second, you need to find more facts to discuss in your post, in order to strengthen your analysis.
For instance, maybe you can find quotes from the articles I provide. Use quotes from liberal and conservative journalists and/or politicians.
Also, you could include more statistics. How much money was spent on the last election? What Super PACs contributed the most to candidates?
Put more facts in, and your reader will be better educated and more convinced.
Overall, I see some very good things in your writing. You have a great flow. Just infuse some facts, and you'll be right on track.
